A Spring Suit!

Well, it's sort of a suit, anyway. Double-breasted waistcoat and sailor skirt over a leg-o-mutton shirtwaist. Black, white and gold button options included. Also includes straw boater, gloves, prim collar/tie, and a couple of other system shirt & tie options.

Available in yellow (pictured), pink, blue, minty green, and violet. This outfit coordinates with the recently released "Spring Hat", too!

It's fun to get out of my usual "box" and explore, and lately I've had fun discovering places where Browncoats congregate in Second Life. This last weekend it was "uniform night" at Firefly's in The Verse, so I dropped in to cut a rug in my Commodore Peterman rig.

Was happy to run into Mr. Davion Holmforth, who just happens to be the editor of the short Firefly inspired film "Browncoats: Redemption". Catch this film if it comes to a festival near you!

Zenmondo Wormser has come up with a spiffy t-shirt slogan generator for those who don't "build" clothes in Second Life. Here's my first attempt (left). I'm wearing it over a long-sleeved undershirt, I tinted it grey, and I left some of the black "non t-shirt" area for trim.

"Look! I'm an Arkham co-ed!"

Zen plans to release a fancier version later, with font choices, etc., but for now it's a quick way to make a t-shirt with a front and/or back slogan!

A Burro's Rant, With Which I Concur (a lot)

Ask any five folks in Second Life what they think Role Play is (or should be), and you'll probably get five different answers. As somebody who likes to keep RP light and casual and more of a photo op to garnish creative writing exercises, I'm happy to let others do the heavy lifting. I do, however, have some strong opinions on what makes satisfying Role Play, and what does not, and I think Mr. HeadBurro Antfarm and I are on the same page, or at least in the same chapter, in this regard. His rant can be read here. It made me laugh (a lot). Top notch rant!

Two new hats for St. Patrick's Day. The "raked" hat is an entirely new style, with a larger profile than earlier raked hats, and a "panache" of plumes fastened with a shamrock brooch.

The "wheel" hat is trimmed with lace and also a shamrock brooch.

Steam Hunt #4!

So, I finally got my hunt gift done and packaged and put out just before midnight: whew! Normally I'm not so "at the last minute", but I'm doing something very different from anything I've done before, and a lot more complicated. I've wanted to make jackets and coats for awhile, but I knew it would involve sculpting and so I've avoided it. When mesh arrives it will be easier, but I think this first effort is pretty satisfactory. The upper parts, including the sleeve shoulder cap and cuffs, are rigid prims; the "skirt" is flexi and attached to the "bodice" section. We'll see how it flies.

This is my attempt at an Edwardian coat which works as a duster or overcoat for men, and a traveling or suit coat for women. This version, for the Steam Hunt, is fairly serviceable, but I'll be fine-tuning it before I put it up for sale in a variety of colors. It will be interesting to get feedback from the Steam Hunters...

Leg o' Mutton sleeves

Add these to any 19th century shirt and turn it into a Gibson Girl shirtwaist! I sculpted these with obvious gathers at the shoulder and a lot of additional drape built right in to the texture so these prims are NOT dependent on a special "fabric" texture for them to look good. Note: these are the sleeve poufs only. Shirts are sold separately. They are copy/mod, so you can really use them for a lot of applications.

My first line of hats is inspired by the US Army campaign hats of the late 19th century. Popularized by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, these hats are perfect for a "working man" look. Snow is gone from Steelhead, Caledon, and many other places in the virtual Northern Hemisphere. Why not add some foliage to your temperate climate landscaping? Rhododendrons can stay out all year, since they're evergreen. This set of one-prim srubs comes with three sizes/shapes, including blooming versions for Summer!

It's not too early to put out crocuses (crocusi?) either.

Intermission

Real or "first" life has taken me away from SL in a big way in the last few weeks. First, it's gardening time. If I don't do stuff before July it's never going to happen. I did better this year, but still not up to spec.

Second: we have a new horse coming. A big, flashy Andalusian stallion who belongs to Mr. P's jousting pard. Our facilities needed a major overhaul, and since we're not exactly solvent it's a "sweat equity" project.

Third: I developed appendicitis last Monday! How's that for a bombshell? Spent a couple of days in hospital with only one tube in my arm (I'll likely never match Jousting Partner's record). Appendix was removed before it went critical, and I'm feeling pretty well, considering. Still on light duty, but better every day.

Having a major shindig at our place this weekend, Colonial India style, so that's in the mix, too.

Mr. Peterman was recently contacted by the Steamcon organizers, and it looks like he'll be giving two lectures and sitting on a panel on Military Uniforms (attention Jagers!) at this year's convention. One of the lectures will be on 19th century weapons (of course), the other TBA. There's a special room rate for convention-goers, and if you buddy-up it's around $50/night for a nice room at the Airport Marriot with internet, etc. This is a great location, as I'm sure there are shuttles to the hotel right from the airport for those flying in.

Shooting and shooting

Today Mr. Peterman and his jousting buddy tried their hands at "Cowboy Mounted Action Shooting", a nice way to combine horses and guns and kill some balloons. I went along to shoot images (moving and non-), and decided I wanted to be in front of the camera for a change. Mr. P shot a few nice frames of me sitting on old Woody, and I thought I would turn one of them in to a faux albumen print.

I have it available with a rust-colored matte right now, and will add indigo and green soon. It's on the wall at my shop in Steelhead, and is L$40 for a set of plain (.jpg) and shadowed (targa) versions, mod/trans.

Work will continue for another few days, whilst I unpack the merchandise, create a comfortable space, and tidy up.

Multitasking

We keep horses in 1st life, as some of you have probably discovered by now. Mr. P is a cavalryman and horse nut, while I concentrate on the cats and chickens...unless he needs me on a horse for cav drill (horses rarely do the drill without a rider). Anyway... is was training time yesterday afternoon, with Mr. P on Woody, Locatya on Marcus, and me on Gryphon. We had just been doing some groudwork training, and decided to ride bareback with just their halters. Well, L and I left blankets/sheets on our guys, because they are shedding so badly right now that we would have looked like tribbles by the time we were done.

I'm not a great rider, but when the phone in my pocket rang, I pulled it out, saw it was Lunar, and answered it...just as Mr. P's horse decided to kick at mine, who jumped sideways. I'm sure Lunar was perplexed to hear, "Helloaaaagh! WOODY!!!! (name of offending horse) I'm sorry...what did you say? I'm trying not to die..." We then had a staccato conversation which consisted of mostly sentence fragments and laughing, as Lunar attempted to give me some news and I attempted to not bounce and slide off the slippery blanket on the back of a trotting, annoyed horse. Luckily, all I lost was my hat (1st life hats are bad that way).

If I had more hands, I might have a picture, albeit blurry, of this encounter. It's just too hard to grab a screenshot in real life sometimes.

As a friendly welcome to Steelhead, Lumina Elvhjem has put together the "Tour de Truit"! We have put out displays of Steelhead Salmon in key locations. They should not be hard to find, as this is a Tour (not a hunt). They are displayed out in the open, often in silly and amusing ways, and are full of special gifts given by our residents. This is supposed to be a fun thing to do, where you can spend your time actually enjoying the spaces you will find, rather than looking for a small prim under a rock somewhere. This Tour will be open for a full month, ending on April 13th (a Monday).

Keep your livestock in and those pesky predators out with some sturdy, rustic, pole/log fencing! Each element is only 1 prim: yes, I've finally started using sculpties (always the last one in town with the new technology). Also included is a sign post so you can hang your shingle saying "open", "welcome", "keep out", or "beware the lemming". One of these days, when I get some clothes run up, I'm going to have a "grand opening", but until then, visit my little barn at Peterman's Folly.

Spring Treelines are in!

Just finished the treelines for spring. A typical conifer/deciduous Pacific Northwest boundary forest...at least typical for my pasture, which is where these photos were taken. There are 3 different 20x20 prims to give you a grand backdrop, whether you want privacy, a theatrical scrim, or to keep people from falling off the edge of the sim. Copy/mod. Available in the greenhouse at Peterman's Folly or on XStreet.

Super Secret Society...not

There seems to be some confusion and furor over the "Second Life Secret Library" book club, started on "Goodreads" and overlapping into SL. The name is most decidedly not a declaration of exclusivity, just a mimicry of another book Goodreads book club and a connected podcast.

Frankly, I love the humor of having a "secret" club that is anything but secret. All book loving folks are welcome to join! If you can't make it to the book discussions, that's ok. There's a forum on the Goodreads site. I love seeing what other folks are reading, and I've discovered some future reads this way. It's just another, minor, social networking thing with an intellectual/amusement twist.

The ultimate joke would be if everybody in Steelhead (and related sims) were members. Yeah, big secret. I'd love that! In fact, anybody who feels left out or excluded should just get on Goodreads and join up. I'm pretty good about approving memberships quickly. The reason we don't have open enrollment is that we'd like to keep it SL-centric. If you want to call that an "agenda" then go right ahead, it's a free world.

Steelhead Navy Uniform Development

This project frightened me at first, but it's forcing me to learn some great Photoshop techniques. Wings 3D is proving to be a tougher nut to crack, but with Tensai's help I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

Finally came up with an emblem/insignia for the Navy. I'm running it up the flagpole, and so far have rec'd one salute (well, Lunar was the only one online at the time). I already have textures with brass/gold backgrounds for buckles and buttons (see the Ning), but I guess I should get official approval before steaming (heh) ahead.

I'm seriously thinking of "skinnying" the fouled anchor a bit, as it really obscures the lighthouse...

I found this coat, already split for riding, at a local thrift shop. I think I need to make phototextures of it and reproduce it for SL. Very spiffy.

Another campaign video from Hotspur O'Toole! Starring Mosseveno Tenk, as himself, and Eva Bellambi as the decrepit old lady trying to cross the street. I think I'm in it as about five different "street crossers"/background actors. Watch for Virrginia Tombola as the dangerous woman driver!

Nice and sunny in the RL Pac NW today, so Mr. Peterman voted for another photo shoot. "Let's do 1850s today!" OK, Mr. Fashion Maven.

Naturally, Gimli had to help. Luckily Woody doesn't mind having a fierce predator stomp around on his back.

Got some good shots of the boy, but my favorite is this one. What a strapping lad he is!

The "Ning" Thing

This is a really functional, useful, intuitive group site for Steelhead, and we should all take gross advantage of it! It's taken a few months for most of us to remember that it was even there, but it's really a great way to keep in touch, especially if you want to check on things without actually logging in to SL all the time.

Snowflake Ball '09

I attended Lady Eva Bellambi's 3rd annual Snowflake Ball tonight, and it was one of the best times I've had in SL. Some folks abhor dance cards, but I find that in SL as well as 1st Life, they ensure that folks mingle and visit more than they otherwise might.

Since LL have pretty much killed events like this on Open Space Sims (for the time being, anyway), Eva had to cast about for another venue other than the customary Loch Avie setting. Luckily, Kamillah Hauptman, Vicerine of Caledon, offered a lovely spot in Pt. Caledon: huzzah!

I actually ended up with a fairly full dance card, which made for a lively evening of entertaining conversation with friends old and new. Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (above L), Col. Hotspur O'Toole (right), and Jagermonster Greegar Hellershanks (below L) were amongst those who championed Yours Truly about the dance, er, rink.

The Jagers impressed me by demonstrating a musical grace to match their size and strength! Kudos to the genetic engineers of old!

Poor Myfanwy Davies was experiencing occular difficulties, and was unable to see her heart-poundingly handsome partner, so I took the liberty of snapping a shot of her dancing with Steelhead's own Total Lunar Eclipse (right).

Again, I cannot state strongly enough what a wonderful evening it was. Thanks to Eva for holding this highlight event of the season, and to Edward Pearse, Lord Argylle, and Miss Emily Orr for DJ-ing and hosting, respectively.

Rising from the sea just to the East of Steelhead Harborside, it's....Port Harbor! Flying over this brave new land, I had to laugh at the stupendous map just under the surface of the water. If only real life were so convenient and organized!

I noticed that Commodore O'Toole had already made landfall at his new digs: huzzah for the Wrath Exiles!

The Guild: Season 2

Season 2 of "The Guild" has started, and it's a hoot! This video is from their site, and it makes me smile as much as the original film it parodies. It's such a great song. I love creativity, even "spoof" creativity if it's done well. I don't play WOW, but I love the gentle spirit of this kind of thing.

PJ Party at Lumi's

Just had to mention that Lumina's spontaneous (at least I assume it was spontaneous) pajama party last night was one of the best "events" I've ever attended in SL. Charming, amusing people, comfy attire, gorgeous surroundings, and just about the best DJ I've ever had the pleasure of hearing, Mr. Shalimando Glineux (sp). He's a gargoyle and has a great look. Hope he gets lots of gigs this month. He also has a magnificently ecclectic music library, and was quick to incorporate requests or spontaneous additions inspired by the ongoing chat. Wow.

Oh, there were Teddy Bear Guns, pillow fights, Lemming Launchers, and, er, pole dancers (egads). It was a hoot. I had so much fun I forgot to take pictures!
